While the associated healthcare spending is only 4 to 6 percent of total healthcare spending in the U.S, the rate of spending growth is alarming. Like drugs, pricing information for medical devices is opaque. Additionally, a majority of the devices available on the market today have not undergone clinical trials. Advocates have long had safety concerns about devices, calling for reforms to the FDA’s regulatory process.
